Loni Venti
Beauty Writer, Editor, Expert
March 2016-present
Senior Beauty Editor, Cosmopolotian
January 2015-March 2016
Candace: What are your everyday makeup must haves?
Loni: “My go-to everyday look would be Red Lips & Cat eye, my favorite red right now would be Covergirl in “HOT” and my favorite eyeliner is a brand called “DHC” and it’s a Japanese company online only liquid liner (pen)”
Candace: 7 years ago you were a Freelance Beauty Assistant, What did you do to get to where to where you are now?
Loni: “So, I’ve actually been a beauty editor for 9 years now, I worked with People Magazine and bounced around, then Cosmo called me and I said OK, lets do this! I also have a Creative writing & Communication degree, and it took me many, many internships plus experience.
I started with Fitness magazine through an internship, then at the time the assistant editor left, & I (LONI) promoted!
And so now with Cosmo, What I do is I market to learn about products and then write about what’s best, what’s new, pitch ideas for photo-shoots and I also work with the associate editor & assistant editor by editing their work”
Candace: What are you trying to accomplish this quarter?
Loni: “ This week actually I am working on a piece that talks about body acne, because the next few seasons we will be seeing more skin, bikini’s and things like that, and were just preparing for spring, and summer! I am struggling with it I didn’t realize what I was getting into when I pitched the idea, but it’s working well! I am also meeting with several companies about the best upcoming products for the next season all in time for the August issue of Cosmo. This can be difficult because I don’t think about those months because they’re so far away from me. Personally I just go back on Facebook maybe a year ago to see what I was doing, weather it was a BBQ or a music festival then I get ideas to write about for that! “
Candace: What do you look for when recruiting interns? Because this is one of my biggest dreams, I am wondering what your advice would be on how to get there.
Loni: “So the company of Cosmo requires one to be enrolled in school and to be able to get credit for the internship. It is based out of New York only, so you would also have to live here if you wanted to work with any magazine because they’re all pretty much based out here.
Now, if you love hair and makeup you don’t need to be an editor, so I suggest getting on board with an agency to do photo-shoots and such with assisting gigs. Then you can build up trust and hopefully grow from there. I also suggest looking into Sephora or a Magazine based out of San Francisco called SOMA. It’s a high-end magazine and it’s just beautiful! Remember to get creative and think outside the box because you never know what something can lead to!”
Candace: Who is your role model, or mentor?
“My current editor and chief Joanna Cole of Cosmo, She knows when to be a leader and when to be on your side but pretty much she just knows how to get shit done, she knew ‘Snap Chat’ was the next biggest thing. I look up to her a lot; I also just take lessons from everyone I meet, learning from their experiences and mistakes and practice on my own. “
